Remembering The Past
This week, the sports past has been celebrated by both national media television and print outlets and it has been great to be a part of.
The late, great John Unitas graced the cover of this week’s Sports Illustrated. The magazine featured a great article remembering the 1958 NFL championship between the Baltimore Colts and the New York Giants.
NBC showed a documentary on Sunday that opened the network’s visual vaults. Archived interviews of Hank Aaron, Joe Namath, Howard Cosell, and Muhammad Ali were featured in this special.
I don’t want to sound maudlin but it was refreshing to see these athletes and games of yesteryear celebrated and remembered. I think in today’s sports world, the past is too often forgotten.
Obviously great feats happen everyday but fans and media need to keep things in historical perspective, before they claim today’s athletes and games, “the greatest ever”. Before Peyton Manning there was Joe Montana, before LeBron James there was Michael Jordan, and before Floyd Mayweather Jr there was Muhammad Ali.
I think the best way for us to do it is to see the athletes and games in living color, which we got a small taste this week with the SI story and NBC’s special. Today’s athletes are great to watch and we have been fortunate to see a lot of memorable games. We should celebrate what we have today but never forget what went on before them.
