Say it Ain’t So Roger

Published by suscott at 12:38 am under Sports Edit This

Normally at this time of the year, fans would be celebrating another exciting start of superstar veteran Roger Clemens. He would have begun his first month of his 25th season in the Major Leagues. The questions would be asked how much longer could Clemens maintain his level of success. It would have been a lot to talk about.
Well on May 1, 2008, Roger Clemens is in the news and fans are talking about him but for all the wrong reasons. Clemens is not pitching on the field this year, but the superstar and veteran is doing a lot of playing off the field. Allegedly, playing with the truth.
For months, Clemens and his lawyer Rusty Hardin hammered away at the Mitchell Report and former trainer Brian McNamee’s allegations that Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs. They responded to these accusations as “absolutely false and defamatory.”
This hammer-down campaign by Clemens and Hardin against McNamee continued 26 days after the Mitchell Report became public record. They repeated the “absolutely false and defamatory” phrase 15 times in their lawsuit against McNamee.
They claimed that McNamee and the Mitchell report “irreparably tainted” Clemens’ reputation. Well this week, it looks like the “Rocket Man” ’s reputation is getting tainted even more. New allegations about Clemens have come out that he might have had two extramarital affairs, including relationships with country singer Mindy McCready and Paulette Dean Daly.
What is just as disturbing as these new allegations is the silence of Clemens and his lawyers on this latest allegation. Clemens has already been accused of being a “cheater” on the field and now he has been accused as a “cheater” off the field.
All I can say Roger, is “Say it ain’t so, say it ain’t so.”
Unfortunately that actually hasn’t been the response from Clemens’ camp. Unlike Clemens’ spirited public campaign against clearing his name about taking enhancing drugs, there has been no public defense against these affair charges.
Besides a short statement released by his lawyers denying that he had an affair. We have not heard from Clemens himself.
Clemens has had a career worthy of enshrinement in the Baseball Hall of Fame before the performance enhancing drug allegations came out. He was also looked as a man of integrity and now unfortunately that is being questioned.
I hope Clemens speaks out against these new allegations and someday can return back to his baseball glory days on the field.
